Make a roar, get the fourth bore!

You've already voted to approve funding for a fourth bore in the Caldecott Tunnel. But if you really want to see the light at the end of this tunnel it is important that you help us watchdog the public approval process. Make a roar, get the fourth bore!

Background and History of the Caldecott Tunnel

The Caldecott Tunnel needs a fourth bore to provide additional lanes to relieve the daily bottleneck. The existing tunnel consists of three bores with two lanes each. Both directions have one dedicated bore or tunnel with the third tunnel reversed two times each day to accommodate traditional commute direction traffic - west in the morning and east in the afternoon. These traditional traffic patterns are changing and now the "reverse commute" direction is also very congested with east bound traffic backing up in the morning and west bound traffic in the evening all trying to get through one bore with only two lanes.

The Project

A fourth bore in the Caldecott Tunnel would provide two additional lanes allowing the dedication of two bores with four lanes traveling in each direction at all times. It would reduce time spent idling in traffic, improve safety and eliminate the costs associated with switching the direction of the third tunnel twice daily. The funding is available but now we need the collective community will to make it happen.

Momentum to build the fourth bore has been building and Caltrans recently released an Environmental Impact Report on the fourth bore proposal. Once this report is approved, construction can begin. Vocal support for the fourth bore and the recently released report will move the project along to construction. The silent majority must speak out or a few naysayers will delay construction leaving us all in the dark. A recent professional poll was taken to gauge support for the tunnel on the west side (where the opposition has been vocal). The poll indicated that more than 68% of the people who live in the Berkeley and Oakland areas near the tunnel support adding the fourth bore. Residents on the eastside of the tunnel have long been locally supportive of the fourth bore.

If you would like to read the draft environmental document for the Caldecott Project, please go to www.dot.ca.gov/dist4/caldecott/. The official deadline to comment on the plan has passed. But your help may be needed as the 4th bore project moves forward.

How Can I Help?

Email info@rebuildca.org with your name and email address so we can provide you with periodic updates.

The Caldecott Tunnel 4th Bore project is vital to getting traffic moving again. It will also create jobs and make it easier for people to live and commute in the Bay Area. Your support is greatly appreciated.
