On February 28, the California Transportation Commission approved the final list of over 50 transportation projects to receive money from Proposition 1B, allocating nearly all of the $4.5 billion available.
The CTC initially released a list of 43 projects around the state to receive funding from the transportation bond passed in November, including many rural area projects but omitting other critical projects in congestion-ridden Southern California and the Bay Area. Following that first announcement, Governor Schwarzenegger and officials from local agencies urged the Commissioners to reconsider the proposed list and to use the full $4.5 billion available from this phase of Prop. 1B (the staff's first list of recommendations used only $2.8 billion in funding). The CTC staff and commissioners responded by allocating the full amount to fund more congestion-relieving projects in the major urban areas and adopting a project list that will truly help commuters and the movement of goods.
