Bond to finance I-580 carpool lane

By Michael Cabanatuan

Caltrans officials said Friday that a carpool lane on Interstate 580 will be the first of 18 Bay Area projects funded by the state transportation bond.

Construction of the $154 million lane will begin in February and open in spring 2010. I-580 ranks as the region's second-most-congested freeway during the eastbound evening commute and third-most-congested in the westbound morning commute.

A new interchange at I-580 and Highway 84 in Livermore and carpool lanes on I-80 near Fairfield, also funded by the voter-approved bond, are scheduled to start construction next year, said Caltrans officials who gathered Friday afternoon along backed-up eastbound lanes of I-580.
