Comprehensive Water Plan Good for State's Residents and Economy
In early November, the Governor and state lawmakers successfully passed a carefully-crafted plan to address the myriad of issues facing California's water quality and supply. This comprehensive solution is made up of policy bills that will:
- Establish a Delta Stewardship Council to oversee the restoration of the Delta, which is the hub of California's water system and provides water to millions of California homes, farms and businesses.
- Set ambitious water conservation goals.
- Ensure better groundwater monitoring and increase enforcement for illegal water diversions.
- In addition, a water bond will also be placed on the November 2010 ballot for voter approval to fund the necessary investments in water quality and supply.
Passage of the bond is absolutely vital to provide the funding necessary to bring immediate drought relief, increase water storage and supply, improve quality and clean up drinking water sources, fund restoration of the Delta, and finance vital water conservation and environmental restoration of precious water ecosystems.
Through local cost-sharing and funding-match requirements, the water bond will not only secure our state's water future, but will also help the economy by creating thousands of jobs in construction, agriculture and other industries around the state.
